[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 14th that they have arrested and detained three cash collectors who traveled nationwide, including Gyeongnam, Busan, Seoul, and Gyeonggi, directly met victims, received approximately 890 million won, and remitted the money to telephone financial fraud organization members.
According to the police, the period of their crimes was from July to September 24, and in particular, cash collector A saw an advertisement for a "high-income part-time job" around June, contacted the telephone financial fraud organization members, and conspired to act as a cash collector who would meet victims in person and receive money upon the organization's instructions.
Through this, A met five victims in the Gyeongnam and Busan areas and received a total of 180 million won, which was then remitted to the telephone financial fraud organization members.
Other cash collectors B and C were introduced to the voice phishing organization members by their friend A and, using the same method, met 13 victims nationwide, including Gyeongnam, received a total of 710 million won, and remitted it to the telephone financial fraud organization members.
The police agency reported that voice phishing crimes exploiting the difficulties of the common people's economy are continuously increasing, and they plan to strengthen intelligence gathering on voice phishing incidents occurring nationwide and respond strictly with detention investigations as a principle.
The Gyeongnam Police Agency stated, "Inducing victims to hand over cash to employees sent by the perpetrators by impersonating financial institutions or investigative agencies via phone calls or text messages is a typical voice phishing method," and added, "The organization recruits members under the pretexts of high-paying part-time jobs or collection part-time jobs, so caution is needed when seeking employment."
