[Asia Economy Reporter Nahana] The Youth Central Committee of the People Power Party has faced heavy criticism from many netizens due to inappropriate poster phrases. Following the party's decision, the youth party officials involved had their appointments canceled and were dismissed. In response to this decision, the People Power Party Youth Committee has once again posted a new poster in defiance.
On the 4th, the People Power Party Youth Committee posted on their official Facebook page a promotional post titled “Introducing the remaining Youth Central Committee leadership,” reminiscent of an obituary.
The poster posted that day featured bold self-introduction phrases similar to before. On Chairman Park Gyeol’s poster, it read “Resign Moon Jae-in government!” Vice Chairman Oh Jin-seok’s poster said, “Citizens die from enemy gunfire! Where is the president?” and Vice Chairman Im Dong-won’s poster stated, “Minister Choo Mi-ae, if you are confident, undergo a special prosecutor investigation.”
In a Facebook post that day, Chairman Park appealed to People Power Party lawmakers, saying, “Please protect our party’s youth,” and pointed out, “If youth are so easily abandoned by the party after disciplinary action for some wrongdoing, I worry whether there will be any youth willing to dedicate themselves to the party in the future.”
He acknowledged that the committee members’ self-introduction phrases could be controversial but added, “However, I question whether the content should be so broadly interpreted that the youth committee members are condemned to the extent that it becomes difficult for them to lead normal social lives.”
He continued, “The free expression of opinions and political beliefs of youth is a precious value that must not be suppressed by any external pressure,” and said, “Youth should not be subjected to criticism and ridicule as if they were criminals who committed serious crimes.”
He also stated, “Our youth committee members have been continuously exposed to malicious personal attacks in the media without any protection, and female members have even been subjected to sexual insults and harassment,” describing the serious harm they have suffered.
Meanwhile, opinions on the post uploaded by the People Power Party Youth Committee that day varied. Some comments offered support, saying, “We support you. Stay strong,” while others criticized, saying, “This is really absurd. The party leadership seems to have targeted the wrong people,” and “There is not even a shred of reflection.” There were also messages urging the party leadership to take responsibility, such as, “The party leadership needs responsible action, not scapegoating.”
