Final Selection of Five Projects Including the 'University Student Mentoring Program for Youth Career and Subject Competency Improvement' (200 Million KRW)
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) held an online youth general assembly on the 26th from 3 PM to 4 PM to select the 2021 Youth Participatory Budget Projects.
Until last year, voting was conducted in the form of an Eunpyeong-style Landsgemeinde at the Eunpyeong Cultural and Arts Center Forest Theater, but this year, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, following the nation’s first online residents’ general assembly, the youth general assembly was also planned as an online broadcast, with about 600 youths participating via the Eunpyeong-gu Office YouTube channel and SimpleFlow, successfully concluding the event.
Eunpyeong-gu collected about 500 diverse youth opinions submitted through the Youth Public Forum in January this year, discovered projects through the Youth Council, underwent department review and main assembly approval, and then proposed candidates for youth voting.
Pre-voting was conducted for about a month from August 31 to September 25; combining 1,157 pre-votes and 107 online deliberation group votes, five projects totaling 200 million KRW, including a university student mentoring program to improve youth career paths and academic skills, were finally selected as the 2021 Youth Participatory Budget Projects.
The finally selected projects will be reflected in next year’s budget and implemented.
Additionally, to deepen understanding of youth proposed projects, an online youth discussion group was recruited and non-face-to-face discussions were held via KakaoTalk open chat rooms.
For about 100 youths who applied as the ‘Online Youth Discussion Group,’ more than 10 online discussion rooms were opened over three days starting September 19, where they presented various opinions on youth participatory budget projects and engaged in heated discussions.
Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, stated, “Even in the difficult situation of large-scale events due to COVID-19, we have strived to guarantee youth participation by utilizing KakaoTalk, YouTube, and other platforms, and we will more actively explore ways for youth to participate anytime and anywhere.”
