[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 27th, the People Power Party launched a relay one-person protest demanding a thorough investigation into the Yeonpyeong Island missing public official shooting incident. This is the first outdoor event of the 21st National Assembly. The People Power Party is pressuring the Democratic Party of Korea to clarify the facts through an emergency agenda inquiry in the plenary session.

The one-person protest started at 9 a.m. with Kim Seong-won, the floor deputy leader, followed by Assemblymen Kwak Sang-do, Jeon Ju-hye, and floor spokesperson Bae Hyun-jin, concluding with floor leader Joo Ho-young from 3 to 5 p.m. The decision on whether to extend the protest period will be made after a party meeting.

In a verbal commentary that day, floor spokesperson Bae said regarding North Korea’s warning not to intrude into their territorial waters, “Although it is a very natural matter, issuing such a message is a kind of threat against our government’s intention to conduct additional investigations,” adding, “From the perspective of the Republic of Korea, which lost its citizen to injustice, this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.”

Spokesperson Bae emphasized, “The People Power Party urges the president, who remains silent, to definitely ask why the national system did not function properly,” and added, “That is what the National Assembly, representing the people, must do.” He also said, “The government and ruling party should actively show their will to clarify why our citizen was brutally killed and why the body cannot even be found in this situation.”
