Hong Kyung-hee, the chief deputy spokesperson of the People’s Party, said in a statement that day, “The remarks and actions of presidential aides representing North Korea’s position, such as ‘Kim Jong-un is an enlightened monarch,’ ‘there are positive signals for dialogue,’ and ‘this is a very unusual expression,’ are a pathetic act that ignores the national sentiment regarding this incident.”

Deputy Spokesperson Hong emphasized, “Now that the perpetrator, North Korea, has admitted and apologized, the President, as the representative of a sovereign nation, should demand a thorough investigation, punishment of those responsible, and corresponding measures to prevent recurrence from the hostile country that harmed its own citizens,” adding, “All citizens hope that the President of the Republic of Korea is not a cowardly pacifist.”

Deputy Spokesperson Hong stated, “North Korea has flagrantly violated the spirit of the inter-Korean military agreement, which declares the principle of coexistence and co-prosperity, and committed war crimes by violating international law that strictly prohibits the use of force against unarmed civilians,” and said, “Now it is time for the President to step forward and make a decisive judgment.”
