[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, criticized on the 24th regarding the North Korean shooting incident involving a missing public official from Yeonpyeong Island, saying, “The North Korean military committed a heinous act by shooting our citizen and even burning the body,” and added, “What is even more shocking is that this was reported to the Blue House and President Moon Jae-in was aware of it, yet he went to the UN and gave a speech on a declaration of the end of the war, which is outrageous.”
On the same day, Ahn said on Facebook, “What feelings does President Moon have about such North Korean atrocities?”
Ahn stated, “I heard from military officials that our military took no action and merely stood by, watching the tragedy of our citizen unfold. They excused it by saying it was difficult to respond actively because the incident occurred near the North Korean area, but hearing that made my blood boil,” and he sharply criticized, “Does the Republic of Korea Armed Forces even have the will to protect its citizens? Can such a military protect the country? Who turned our military into such a foolish force? In short, it is a matter of deep regret.”
Ahn emphasized, “A military that cannot protect its citizens has no reason to exist. A government without the will to protect its people has no reason to exist,” and added, “From the beginning to the end of the incident, the entire truth must be revealed. We must strongly protest to North Korea and demand strict punishment for those responsible.” He further stated, “Honestly, I wish to summon all those involved with North Korea to Seoul and punish them in front of our citizens,” and concluded, “Isn’t that what a proper, rightful country should do?”
