U+ Altteul Phone Media Log Self-Activation Rate 48%
Self-Activation Cases Also Exceed 70,000, Twice Last Year
Thanks to Increased USIM Sales Locations Including 5 Major Convenience Stores
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The number of consumers purchasing budget phone SIM cards at convenience stores or online and activating them through self-service is increasing. It was found that 5 out of 10 people chose self-activation.
On the 24th, LG Uplus announced that among customers who subscribed to its budget phone subsidiary Medialog, the self-activation rate reached 48%. The number of self-activation cases increased from 35,000 last year to 71,000 this year (from January to August).
Self-activation is a non-face-to-face simple service where customers activate their budget phone SIM cards themselves without applying for activation via ARS after purchasing the SIM card. At KB Kookmin Bank's Liv M (Liv Mobile), which sells U+ budget phones, more than 80% of subscribers used self-activation. LG HelloVision also introduced self-activation in August, and it was reported that 30% of all activations used self-activation. Self-activation is expected to expand to Enex Telecom, ACN Korea, Smatel, S1, KeunSaram, and others within this year.
One of the factors contributing to the increase in self-activation is the growing opportunities to subscribe to U+ budget phones at offline stores such as convenience stores. Among all budget phone SIM cards sold nationwide at convenience stores, 55% are U+ budget phones.
LG Uplus is running the 'Unimaginable Chuseok Gift Certificate Promotion' until October 10, offering up to 20,000 KRW worth of convenience store gift certificates to customers who purchase budget phone SIM cards at convenience stores.
Kang Jinwook, head of LG Uplus MVNO, said, "In a situation where interest in non-face-to-face services such as COVID-19 is increasing, self-activation, which allows customers to join U+ budget phones more easily and quickly, is on the rise. We will strive to create differentiated services and expand subscription channels so that more customers can use U+ budget phones."
