[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] An 8-megawatt (MW) fuel cell power plant capable of supplying electricity to 63,000 households has been completed in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do.
Korea East-West Power announced on the 23rd that it held a completion ceremony for the Paju fuel cell power plant and an opening ceremony for rural village city gas supply.
East-West Power stated that after six months of construction with a project cost of 53.8 billion KRW, the power plant was completed.
The power plant is expected to generate approximately 70,000 MWh of electricity annually, enough to supply 63,000 households in Paju-si.
The Paju fuel cell power plant is part of a social overhead capital (SOC) project that East-West Power has been undertaking since last year.
In December of last year, East-West Power jointly invested with Seoul City Gas and SK Construction to establish a special purpose corporation called Paju Eco Energy, building the fuel cell power plant on a 2,000㎡ (approximately 600 pyeong) site while providing free support for city gas pipeline construction.
According to East-West Power, 74 households in villages around Paju-si can now use residential city gas without any additional costs by utilizing the city gas supply pipelines necessary for the fuel cell power plant.
East-West Power plans to expand the SOC-type fuel cell projects with a total capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) to city gas underserved areas near Paju and other regions in the future.
Park Iljun, CEO of East-West Power, said, "The Paju fuel cell power project is an expansion of new and renewable energy welcomed by the local community and a new win-win model that will lead the development of underserved rural villages."
Meanwhile, East-West Power finalized the 'East-West Power New Deal Comprehensive Plan' last month in line with the government's 'Korean New Deal' comprehensive plan.
In the Green New Deal sector, including new and renewable energy and the hydrogen industry, it plans to invest 2.7 trillion KRW by 2025 to secure a facility capacity of 4.3 GW.
