[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando Maritime Police Station (Chief Park Je-su) announced on the 23rd that since the 21st, ahead of the Chuseok holiday, it has launched intensive quarantine activities targeting vessels employing foreign workers and marine and fisheries companies in the jurisdiction to prevent infectious diseases.
According to Wando Maritime Police, due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus through overseas inflow and local infections regardless of nationality, public anxiety has greatly increased. To prevent the inflow and spread of infectious diseases in the region ahead of the Chuseok holiday, quarantine activities have been initiated.
Since March, they have actively conducted quarantine activities including social distancing promotion targeting foreign-flagged vessels docking at non-open ports (Wando Nohwado Sanyangjin Port, Haenam Seongsan Port), foreign fishing vessels, and marine and fisheries companies; assessing the COVID-19 quarantine status; distributing quarantine supplies (masks, hand sanitizers, etc.); and disinfecting collective residences of foreign crew members. They plan to continue conducting quarantine in vulnerable areas within the jurisdiction to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
A Wando Maritime Police official stated, “This Chuseok quarantine activity targeting foreign worker-employed vessels and marine and fisheries companies, which are blind spots for quarantine, was a good opportunity to listen to field difficulties and communicate with the public.” He added, “We will continue to strive to become a maritime police force that approaches the public first through proactive quarantine activities.”
