Police Launch 'Comprehensive Security Operations' Ahead of Chuseok... Preparing for Major Crimes and COVID-19 Prevention

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police have launched special security activities to prevent major crimes such as those infringing on residents' daily lives expected during the Chuseok holiday and to support quarantine measures related to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

The National Police Agency announced on the 21st that it will carry out a "Comprehensive Security Operation for the Chuseok Holiday" for two weeks from the 21st to the 4th of next month.

The police will first mobilize all available personnel to conduct visible patrol activities and diagnose vulnerabilities in areas such as convenience stores, financial institutions, and densely populated multi-family housing areas to carry out customized prevention activities. They plan to respond promptly to reports related to violations such as COVID-19 self-quarantine breaches and administrative order violations, while supporting local governments' quarantine management.

In addition, they will conduct full monitoring and victim protection measures for households at risk of repeated domestic violence and focus on cracking down on crimes infringing on residents' lives, such as robbery, theft, and street violence.

During this period, management to ensure traffic safety and smooth flow will also be strengthened. They will manage congested places where demand for holiday preparations is concentrated, such as traditional markets and large marts, and focus on cracking down on major legal violations such as driving on highway shoulders and drunk driving during the holiday period. The police plan to deploy 27 undercover patrol cars based at 268 highway traffic observation stations for enforcement.

Furthermore, crime prevention in foreigner-dense areas and strengthening anti-terror safety at multi-use facilities will also be promoted. A National Police Agency official said, "In addition to the increased security demand during the Chuseok holiday period, we will concentrate the capabilities of all functions to prepare for strengthened quarantine measures due to COVID-19 and create a peaceful holiday atmosphere."
