Seongbuk-gu Selects 50 '2020 Our Neighborhood Energy Saving Kings'

Judging of 512 Contestants Challenging the 'Energy Saving King' Title... Seongbuk-gu Energy Saving King’s Average Monthly Electricity Usage About 138kWh, 50% of Average Household Consumption

Seongbuk-gu Selects 50 '2020 Our Neighborhood Energy Saving Kings'

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Seungro Lee), operating the Eco Mileage System and Seongbuk Power Saving Center to realize a "Greenhouse Gas-Free Seongbuk," selected the "2020 Our Neighborhood Power Saving King" among Seongbuk residents to discover excellent cases of energy saving and establish a culture of voluntary energy conservation.

The selection criteria were households with the lowest electricity usage over one year from April last year to March this year. Among a total of 512 applicants, they were classified into five groups based on family size (1 to 5 or more members), and considering the distribution of applicants and electricity usage, 4 people from 1-person households, 14 from 2-person households, 12 from 3-person households, 15 from 4-person households, and 5 from households with 5 or more members were selected respectively.

The average monthly electricity consumption of the households selected as Power Saving Kings was about 138 kWh, which was 50% of the average monthly usage of 260 kWh for all households in Seongbuk-gu in 2019.

The households selected as Power Saving Kings were provided with prizes worth 50,000 KRW (such as energy-saving related items), and all other participants were given a "power-saving multi-tap" as a souvenir to encourage energy-saving practices.

The selected Power Saving Kings strictly adhered to energy-saving habits such as cutting off standby power, using gas pressure rice cookers, washing laundry all at once, setting appropriate temperatures for heating and cooling, turning off all unnecessary power sources like refrigerators when going out, and turning off lights in empty rooms.

In particular, two people including Mr. Kim from Samseon-dong (a 2-person household with an average monthly electricity usage of 110 kWh) not only practiced the above common habits but also showed interest in the city-wide movement for energy saving in daily life, such as participating in the "Happy Lights Out Day" campaign held on the 22nd of every month.

Seongbuk-gu plans to continue promoting the Power Saving Kings’ practices and carry out various energy-saving campaigns that anyone can easily participate in to respond to the increasingly serious climate change, thereby practicing greenhouse gas reduction together with all residents.
