Chonnam National University to Build a 'Digital Campus' in Preparation for the Post-Corona Era

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chonnam National University is fully transitioning to a digital campus.

On the 18th, Chonnam National University announced that it will gradually build digital infrastructure through an ICT (Information and Communication Technology) advancement project to proactively respond to future-oriented education and changes in the educational environment in the post-COVID-19 era.

The Chonnam National University Information and Computing Center (Director Lee Chilwoo) plans to switch to an ultra-high-speed future network and establish a hybrid cloud system to proactively respond to changes in educational methods such as video lectures and video education, and to facilitate the large-scale production and transmission of digital information, which is expected to increase significantly.

The "ultra-high-speed future network" will combine an ultra-high-speed wired network based on SDN (Software Defined Network), WiFi-6 wireless network, and 5G network, increasing data transmission speeds between campus buildings from the current 1Gbps to 10Gbps, nearly ten times faster.

Even if almost all students simultaneously access video and online lectures, there will be no disruption to the progress.

The Information and Computing Center will also introduce pilot services for future technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), voice bots, autonomous driving, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) based on the 5G network, and install intelligent fever screening and automated entry registration systems using video and QR codes in all buildings to prevent COVID-19 spread and manage access.

Additionally, all university websites will be transitioned to a public cloud-based system, and a "hybrid cloud data center" linked with the public cloud will be established on campus, allowing network access anywhere on campus, whether in classrooms, libraries, or research labs.

It will even enable access to necessary digital information and data utilization during remote work or overseas business trips.

Lee Chilwoo, Director of the Information and Computing Center, said, "Education in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution must become open, horizontal, and self-directed, and this requires an information and communication environment that is hyper-connected, ultra-high-speed, and ultra-low latency. Through this project, Chonnam National University will lay the foundation for digital transformation into a future-oriented digital campus."

Meanwhile, Chonnam National University received the highest evaluation among universities in the Ministry of Education’s 2020 on-site inspection of information security levels.
