Geochang Traditional Market ... Selected for 2021 Cultural Tourism Market Development Project

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Geochang County in Gyeongnam announced on the 17th that Geochang Traditional Market has been finally selected for the 2021 Cultural Tourism Market Development Project, part of the Traditional Market and Shopping District Revitalization Support Project hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

This Cultural Tourism Market Development Project aims to revitalize traditional markets through building cultural content linked to unique local resources, developing market representative products using local specialties, and promotion and marketing. Approximately 1 billion KRW will be supported over two years for Geochang Traditional Market.

The project includes improving the market notification system, enhancing spatial platforms, establishing media art for market environment improvement, and cultural tourism projects created together by merchants and local residents such as the Geochang Goblin Market, Summer Bingmaek Festival, and product development using local specialties. Additionally, promotion, marketing, and merchant capacity building will be pursued.

Gu In-mo, the governor of Geochang County, said, “Through the establishment of a complex youth mall and the Cultural Tourism Market Development Project, Geochang Traditional Market will be reborn as a cultural tourism hub. Tourists will visit the traditional market, which is armed with diverse content and local characteristics, and as a result, sales of market and alleyway small business owners will increase, contributing to the revitalization of the local economy.”

Geochang Traditional Market was selected in 2019 for the ‘2020 Traditional Market Youth Mall Development Project’ and is currently promoting the Geochang Traditional Market Complex Youth Mall Development Project, which utilizes vacant spaces within the traditional market to create 16 youth stores, shared spaces, and infrastructure, attracting young customers and creating quality youth jobs.
