HMM Urgently Deploys Second 4600TEU-Class Vessel for Exporters to the US

Export Companies Struggling with Container Shortage... HMM "We Will Take Responsibility as the Leading National Shipping Company"

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] HMM has urgently deployed one container ship on the North American West Coast route for domestic export companies.

On the 15th, HMM announced that it will urgently deploy the 4600 TEU (a unit referring to one 6m container) class container ship 'HMM Integral' on the direct route from Busan to Los Angeles (LA), USA, starting on the 29th. This urgent deployment for export companies is the second time following last month.

This temporary service was decided to support domestic shippers who have been struggling with a shortage of space on the North American West Coast route recently. Due to the impact of COVID-19, shipping companies have proactively reduced space supply, causing domestic shippers to face difficulties with insufficient space and soaring freight rates. Accordingly, HMM plans to operate a direct route between Busan and LA without passing through other regions such as China to protect domestic shippers.

Although global cargo volume has decreased worldwide due to the spread of COVID-19, the domestic export volume is increasing as the US economy shows signs of recovery centered on manufacturing and services. In particular, domestic cargo volume is on the rise ahead of the Chuseok holiday at the end of September, and the company explained that Korea-origin cargo volume will significantly increase once the US fully resumes economic activities.
