118 Local Cases...New COVID-19 Cases in the Capital Region Fall Below 100

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] The number of new domestic COVID-19 cases in South Korea has remained in the triple digits for ten consecutive days. Although the rapid spread has somewhat eased, sporadic infections continue to appear across the country, maintaining a sense of unease.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) reported that as of midnight on the 12th, 136 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 22,055. Daily new cases peaked at 441 on the 27th of last month after the outbreak began in the metropolitan area and then showed a declining trend. From the 8th, the numbers appeared to rise again with 136→156→155→176 cases, but on this day, the count dropped by about 40 to 136 compared to the previous day.
Among the new cases on this day, 118 were locally transmitted, excluding 18 imported cases. By region, 50 cases were reported in Seoul, 28 in Gyeonggi, and 8 in Incheon, totaling 86 new confirmed cases in the metropolitan area alone. The number of cases in the metropolitan area fell below 100 again, following 98 cases on the 10th. Other regions reported 7 cases in Daejeon, 6 in Chungnam, 4 in Busan, 3 each in Daegu, Gwangju, and Gangwon, 2 each in Gyeongbuk and Gyeongnam, and 1 each in Jeju and Ulsan.
At Severance Hospital in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, the number of confirmed cases continued to rise, reaching a total of 23 patients by the afternoon of the previous day. At Kangwon National University Hospital in Chuncheon, Gangwon, a confirmed COVID-19 case led to the closure of the emergency room, and at Asan Medical Center in Seoul, a mother who had just given birth tested positive, indicating ongoing infections in large hospitals.
Additional cases were reported in existing cluster outbreaks. These include the Gwanghwamun downtown rally (cumulative 565 cases), the Illyeonjeongjong Seoul Buddhist Mission in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul (22 cases), the Coupang logistics center in Songpa-gu, Seoul (16 cases), the metropolitan area mountain caf? gathering (35 cases), the Daejeon health supplement briefing session (51 cases), and the Jongno-gu Office park and green space management (11 cases).
There were 18 imported cases. Among them, 10 were detected during quarantine inspections at airports or ports, while the remaining 8 were confirmed while in self-quarantine at their residences or temporary living facilities in regions including Gyeonggi (4), Daegu, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, and Gyeongnam (1 each). Of the imported cases, 13 were foreigners.
The number of deaths increased by 5 on the previous day, bringing the total to 355. The number of patients in critical or severe condition after COVID-19 diagnosis decreased by 11 to 164.
