[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City will allow the extension of the vehicle operation period (vehicle age) by one year for city buses, charter buses, and taxis operating in the region.

According to the city on the 4th, an amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Passenger Transport Service Act, which allows the extension of the vehicle operation period by one year from the current standard, came into effect on the 1st.

Under the amendment, owners of vehicles whose basic vehicle age expired or is scheduled to expire between August 31, 2018, and June 29, 2021, can extend the operation period.

However, the application is limited to cases where the vehicle passes the current 24-item automobile inspection (automobile inspection under the Automobile Management Act) conducted by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, including driving, steering, braking systems, and emissions.

The expected number of vehicles eligible for the vehicle age extension by type is 187 city buses, 169 charter buses, and 1,628 taxis.

Jeon Il-hong, head of the city's Transportation and Parking Division, said, “Due to the recent spread of infectious diseases and a sharp decline in passengers, the operating conditions of the city bus, charter bus, and taxi industries have deteriorated. The extension of the vehicle age is a measure to reduce the cost burden of vehicle replacement for the industry, and the city plans to continuously seek support measures for the city bus, charter bus, and taxi industries in the future.”
