[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Despite the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, employment is going smoothly. This university turned crisis into opportunity.

Last year, Dongmyung University, which recorded the highest employment rate among medium-to-large general universities in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (Bu-Ul-Gyeong) region, continues to open the gateway to employment without interruption this year as well.

Park Dong-hyung, a senior in the Department of Media Communication (Department Head Lee Hee-seung) at this university, secured a job immediately after serving as a long-term intern during the first semester and a short-term intern during the summer vacation at a subsidiary production team of a broadcasting station in the Busan area.

Kim Ji-eun, also a senior in the same department, was employed as an FD at Ulsan MBC this spring based on her first internship experience during last winter vacation. Jang Kyung-min was hired immediately after an internship in 2019 and is currently editing news at Busan MBC. Kim Su-jin and Jung Hyun-seok also succeeded in employment or entrepreneurship right after their internships.

Park Dong-hyung, who succeeded in employment in September this year, said, “Based on what I learned at school, I was able to improve my practical skills by combining field practice internships, and I am very happy that my capabilities could be fully demonstrated and directly connected to employment.”

The Department of Media Communication, shouting “Crisis is opportunity!” is led by the department head and all professors who manage and continuously counsel students. Accurate information about students is also shared.

In particular, Professor Jeong Mi-young, the employment coordinator of the Department of Media Communication, is leading the improvement of employment rates by recommending field practice internships and linking them to employment through harmonious matching between the needs desired by companies and the career directions hoped for by students.

Besides field practice internship opportunities, the Department of Media Communication is strengthening rapport and bonding with students through a double mentoring program.

In addition to forming an industry-academia cooperation council, the department is actively involved in employment rates by establishing personal networks with local companies such as the TU major-specific industry-academia cooperation council.

Earlier, on January 10, Dongmyung University recorded the highest employment rate (71.8%) among medium-to-large general universities in the Bu-Ul-Gyeong region with over 1,000 graduates as of the end of December 2018.

Dongmyung University, which has set its specialization direction as an ‘AI-strong university,’ established the AI Convergence College in the undergraduate program starting in 2021, the first among universities in the Busan area, and plans to expand AI convergence majors to all colleges from 2022.

In May, it was the only private university in Busan selected for the 4th Industrial Revolution Innovation Leading University Project and will receive a total of 2 billion KRW in support from the Ministry of Education until 2021.

The College of Engineering, centered on the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Department of Automotive Engineering, and Department of Mechanical Engineering, has also launched a talent development project for ‘Digital Twin Technology for Autonomous Driving V2V (Vehicle to Vessel).’
