"Immediately Stop Administrative Orders and Start Dialogue with the Medical Community"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, stated on the 27th, “I hope the Moon Jae-in administration immediately cancels the current plan to establish a public medical school, which betrays the COVID-19 frontline workers and only brings despair to powerless and unprotected citizens.”
On the same day, Ahn said on Facebook, “It is no longer surprising, but is the justice and fairness pursued by the Moon Jae-in administration really blatantly conducting unfair admissions? Also, immediately stop the administrative order and start dialogue with the medical community. Focus more on overcoming COVID-19 and addressing the economic crisis,” he said.
He pointed out, “Amid public concern, a total strike by the medical community has been underway since yesterday. The government has not withdrawn its plan to establish a public medical school, which is clearly a feast for the ruling class only, and the medical community is not backing down either. The most fundamental question to ask now is why it is happening at this time.”
He continued, “Even if the medical school is established, it takes 14 years to graduate, complete internships and residencies, and for men to finish military service. Why launch a policy that requires such a long time to verify its effectiveness right now, at the threshold of the second wave of COVID-19? Is it to divert the public’s anger caused by the failure of real estate policies elsewhere? Or is it to shift the responsibility for quarantine to doctors if the second wave of COVID-19 materializes, allowing the government to escape?”
Ahn said, “At this moment, it is clear that the government, not the medical staff, is holding the public’s health hostage by worsening the situation with absurd explanations and inappropriate public opinion campaigns. It is like a head of household showing up with an oil bottle instead of a water bucket when the house is on fire,” adding, “Does suppressing and bullying solve the problem? Is this administration a regime of bullying?”
Addressing the medical community, Ahn said, “Patients place all their hope in doctors, not the government. If there is a chance to survive but it is lost, the hope placed in medical staff will turn into despair and resentment. Please stop the total strike. No matter how poorly the government acts, now is the time to unite efforts and fully commit to COVID-19 prevention and response.”
