[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Oh Se-hoon, former mayor of Seoul and opposition presidential candidate, criticized the ruling Democratic Party's proposed "National Cemetery Act Amendment," saying, "From the people's perspective, it causes tears of blood, so in these difficult times, is this really necessary?" and urged, "Let's move toward the future."
On the 14th, Oh posted on Facebook, "The Democratic Party plans to relocate the graves of Korean War veterans who defended the country through the amendment of the National Cemetery Act. Although severe public conflict is expected, they insist it must be done," he said.
The Democratic Party intends to amend the National Cemetery Act to prevent pro-Japanese collaborators from being interred in the national cemetery and to forcibly relocate those already buried there. Regarding this, Oh pointed out, "Our people are well aware that many officials in the Democratic Party and this government’s cabinet were deeply immersed in Juche ideology during their youth, praising Kim Il-sung?who initiated the Korean War that caused millions of deaths and injuries?as a unique deity, thereby denying the identity of the Republic of Korea. Nevertheless, they were given opportunities to enter public office and even to govern the country."
He continued, "According to the Democratic Party's logic, even if those officials devoted their lives to the country, they cannot be buried in the national cemetery. Do you dig up graves just because of youthful mistakes?" he questioned.
Oh added, "Stop stirring up public agitation and conflict by bringing up past issues. Focus on alleviating the suffering of the common people, which you have made difficult. While the world is moving toward the future, South Korea alone is stuck a hundred years behind. It's time to move toward the future," he said.
