[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The police have requested an arrest warrant for a man in his 30s who committed 'random assaults' on women walking late at night in the heart of Gangnam, Seoul.
The Gangnam Police Station in Seoul announced on the 13th that they have applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A on charges of injury.
Initially, the police booked Mr. A on assault charges, but changed the applicable law after the victim submitted a medical certificate of injury. A police official explained the reason for the warrant application, saying, "The case is serious as the assaults were committed against multiple unspecified women on the street late at night."
Mr. A has been under police investigation for allegedly punching the face of Ms. B, who was standing on the street in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, trying to hail a taxi around 12:40 a.m. on the 8th, and then fleeing the scene. It was revealed that Mr. A also assaulted another woman he encountered while fleeing.
Mr. A voluntarily appeared at the Gangnam Police Station on the morning of the 10th and underwent questioning. During the investigation, he reportedly stated, "I do not remember because I was intoxicated."
The police conducted a focused investigation on Mr. A's movements around Nonhyeon-dong and confirmed a total of seven female victims.
