Biden and Trump Clash in First Joint Press Conference... Trump Says "Harris Will Be a Total Failure"
Wall Street and IT Industry Relieved by Vice Presidential Nomination of Harris
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The nomination of Senator Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's vice-presidential candidate brought a sigh of relief to the U.S. financial and IT industries.
The New York Times positively evaluated that former Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's nomination of Senator Harris as his running mate would secure even greater corporate support. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) also reported Wall Street's reaction to Harris's nomination with the headline "Relieved." Bloomberg News quoted Tom Nides, Morgan Stanley Vice Chairman, saying, "Harris's nomination announcement received unusually favorable reviews on Wall Street."
The reason major Wall Street players view Harris positively is due to her moderate stance. By nominating Harris, the worst-case scenario of Senator Elizabeth Warren, known as Wall Street's "Grim Reaper," being chosen as the vice-presidential candidate was avoided.
In particular, Harris's policy record strongly reflects a centrist image. WSJ cited Blair Effron, co-founder of Centerview Partners, saying, "Harris emphasizes corporate responsibility but takes a step back when it comes to profit sharing."
However, her relationship with Wall Street is not without friction. In 2011, shortly after the financial crisis, while serving as California's Attorney General, she strongly pressured mortgage companies.
IT companies in Silicon Valley also welcomed Harris's familiar nomination. Harris worked as a prosecutor in San Francisco, home to many major IT firms, and has spent decades building relationships with business leaders and raising campaign funds in the area.
The NYT reported that IT executives appeared excited about Harris's vice-presidential nomination. Given that the U.S. Congress is scrutinizing monopoly issues involving major IT companies like Amazon, Google, and Facebook, Harris is expected to be an ally for these firms.
Biden and Harris appeared together publicly for the first time at a press conference held in Delaware, Biden's political hometown. At the event, Harris launched a fierce attack on President Donald Trump. Targeting Trump, she criticized, "America desperately needs leadership, but we have a president who cares more about himself than the people who elected him." She added, "In 83 days, we have the opportunity to choose a better future for our country," emphasizing that "former Vice President Biden and I will rebuild a better nation." She also stated, "We are experiencing a moral reckoning with racism and systemic inequality," urging continued efforts to confront ongoing racial discrimination.
Former Vice President Biden praised Harris as an inspiring woman who will help rebuild America and promised to rectify President Trump's failures.
President Trump responded to the duo's first joint appearance with harsh words, predicting it would be a total failure. At a White House briefing that day, when asked about Harris, Trump said, "I think it will be a total failure. I look forward to the debate between him and Vice President Mike Pence. I think he will do better than when he completely defeated Senator Kaine."
Regarding Biden and Harris's first joint appearance, Trump said, "I didn't watch it. I saw a little of what Biden said, a little of what Harris said, and that was enough."
