Public Opinion Reversed... United Party 36.5% vs. Democratic Party 33.4% 'Overturn' [Realmeter]


[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] The support rate for the United Future Party has surpassed that of the Democratic Party of Korea. This reversal in party support rates is the first since the Moon Jae-in administration began, and if traced back to the predecessor of the United Future Party, the Saenuri Party, it is the first time since October 2016.


According to a poll conducted by Realmeter commissioned by tbs from the 10th to the 12th, the United Future Party recorded its highest support rate since its founding at 36.5%, surpassing the Democratic Party's 33.4%, the agency announced on the 13th. The United Future Party's support rose by 1.9 percentage points compared to the previous week, while the Democratic Party's support fell by 1.7 percentage points. The gap between the two parties' support rates is 3.1 percentage points, which is within the margin of error.


In daily support rates, the United Future Party consistently held the lead. Notably, on the 10th, when Kim Jong-in, the United Future Party's Emergency Committee Chairman, and Joo Ho-young, the floor leader, visited the flood-affected area in Gurye, Jeollanam-do, the party led the Democratic Party by as much as 4.5 percentage points.


The United Future Party's support showed significant increases in its core bases of Daegu·Gyeongbuk and Busan·Gyeongnam, and also rose in the Seoul area. Support increased among those in their 50s and those aged 70 and above, as well as among male demographics. However, support declined among conservative groups.


The Democratic Party saw declines in Gwangju·Jeolla and Chungcheong regions, among those aged 70 and above, those in their 50s, progressive groups, agricultural and fishery workers, and students. In particular, in Gwangju·Jeolla, considered the party's stronghold, support dropped to 47.8%, falling 11.5 percentage points from the previous week and dipping below 50%.


Support rates for parties other than the two major ones were as follows: Open Democratic Party 5.2%, Justice Party 5.1%, and People's Party 3.4%.


Meanwhile, President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his administration fell by 0.6 percentage points from the previous week to 43.3%. The disapproval rating rose by 0.1 percentage points to 52.5%.


This survey contacted 28,684 voters aged 18 and over nationwide, with a final 1,507 respondents completing the survey, resulting in a response rate of 5.3%.
