LG Electronics Rollable OLED TV Launch Imminent
Expected to Be Priced Around 100 Million KRW Per Unit
LG Electronics Rollable TV unveiled at the CES consumer electronics show in the United States earlier this year
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] LG Electronics is set to launch a 'rollable TV' that can be rolled up as early as next month. The price is reported to be around 100 million KRW. LG Electronics plans to increase its market share by expanding its ultra-premium TV lineup alongside its existing OLED TVs.
According to industry sources on the 12th, LG Electronics will unveil the world's first rollable TV next month. The rollable TV's most distinctive feature is its use of LG Display's OLED panel, allowing the screen to be rolled up. When watching TV, the screen can be unfolded, and when not in use, it can be rolled back into the main body, maximizing space utilization.
Known as the 'dream TV,' it has swept various awards even before its release, including the Presidential Award at the Korea Industrial Technology R&D Exhibition, the CES Innovation Award, and the Inventor of the Year Award, thanks to its innovative technology.
LG Electronics revealed the rollable TV to the public early last year and announced its upcoming release, but the launch was delayed due to the need for some technical improvements and various reasons including the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the company now plans to release the rollable TV as early as next month, or at the latest within the fourth quarter of this year. It is reported that final reviews and work are underway in various fields such as production, sales, and design.
LG Display, the panel manufacturer, is also said to have established a supply plan for rollable TV panels. Currently, about 1,000 panels can be produced monthly at its Paju plant in Gyeonggi Province, and the company plans to expand the production line next year to increase output to several thousand panels. The success of LG Electronics' rollable TV business depends heavily on how smoothly LG Display can supply the panels.
The price per unit is expected to be around 100 million KRW. Although some foreign media initially speculated that the price might drop to 60 to 70 million KRW to improve marketability, LG Electronics stated, "There is currently no possibility that the price will drop that much."
Given the high price per unit, initial sales are expected to target wealthy individuals and corporations both domestically and internationally. Later, the price is expected to be lowered to increase accessibility for the general public.
