Poet Joo Min-hyun (31), author of the poetry collection Kilt, and Quilt, and novelist Kim Yu-dam (37), author of the short story collection Tambourine, will receive the Shin Dong-yeop Literary Award.
Changbi Publishers announced on the 10th that, after deliberations by the judging committee, they selected the winners of the 38th Shin Dong-yeop Literary Award. The Shin Dong-yeop Literary Award was jointly established by the family of poet Shin Dong-yeop (1930?1969) and Changbi to honor the poet’s literary legacy and spirit and to support talented writers. The award is judged based on works published within the last two years by writers who have debuted within the past 10 years or have equivalent experience.
Poet Joo debuted in 2017 through the Hankyung Shincheon Literary Contest, and novelist Kim debuted in 2016 through the Seoul Shincheon Literary Contest. The judging committee commented on Kilt, and Quilt, saying it “flexibly delves into the issues of contemporary subjects and shows the possibility of a new ‘we.’” Regarding Tambourine, they said it “faces the realities of contemporary life while capturing a unique rhythm and emotional tone.”
The 20th Changbi New Poet Award was given to poet Yoo Hye-bin for Song of Emigration and four other poems. The 23rd Changbi New Fiction Award was awarded to novelist Kim Yu-na for Nameless Heart. There was no winner for the 27th Changbi New Criticism Award. The award ceremony will be held at the end of November.
