Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education Provides 1,500 PCs Free of Charge to Low-Income Students

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced on the 6th that it will provide 1,500 computers to underprivileged students from low-income families to bridge the information gap and support online learning.

This support project selected 1,500 eligible students through a screening process in June to assist remote classes due to the spread of COVID-19, and plans to install PCs in each household over two months starting this month.

This year’s PC support for low-income students is 7.5 times larger than last year’s 200 units. The eligible recipients include ▲ recipients of National Basic Livelihood Security (living, medical, housing, education) ▲ students from single-parent families under protection ▲ students from refugee-recognized households.

The provided computers will be equipped with software such as Hancom Office and MS Office, and all-in-one LED monitors with speakers necessary for watching EBS video lectures. Additionally, a youth harmful content blocking program will be provided to promote proper internet use and prevent negative effects of informatization.

Meanwhile, Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education also supports 6,500 vulnerable households with 1.5 billion KRW for internet communication fees, as well as various educational contents such as EBS educational broadcasts and cyber home learning available year-round through ongoing applications.

Jung Mi-ra, Director of the Safety and Welfare Division, said, “We hope this will help students facing economic difficulties due to the impact of COVID-19 with their online learning,” and added, “We will continue to expand educational informatization support to bridge the information and learning gaps for students from educationally marginalized groups.”
