[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seoyangho) has expanded the 'Women’s Safe Delivery Locker' at Dasan-dong Chunghyun Public Parking Lot to prevent crimes targeting single-woman households.

The Women’s Safe Delivery Locker is an unmanned parcel locker installed in areas with single-person households or densely populated residential areas. It allows users to receive parcels or use it as a storage locker. Since the residential address is not exposed when receiving parcels, it fundamentally blocks violent crimes committed by impersonating delivery workers.

Last month, Jung-gu added more Women’s Safe Delivery Lockers inside the Chunghyun Public Parking Lot in Dasan-dong to meet the demand for unmanned parcel lockers in the residential-heavy Dasan-dong area, and began operation on the 15th of last month.

With this expansion, Women’s Safe Delivery Lockers are now operated at eight locations, including the existing Myeongdong Community Center, Jangchung Gymnasium back gate, and Yaksu Church.

It is well received by single-woman households who are not available to receive parcels during the day or want to protect their privacy. Above all, it plays a significant role in alleviating fears of crime, resulting in high user satisfaction.

Anyone can use it regardless of gender, it operates 24/7 year-round, and there is no separate usage fee. However, to prevent long-term storage or abandonment of items and to allow more residents to use it, a fee of 1,000 KRW per day is charged if the storage time exceeds 48 hours.

The usage method is simple. When the user writes the Women’s Safe Delivery Locker address as the recipient’s address, the delivery worker stores the item in the locker and sends the authentication code to the user via text message. The user then enters the authentication code to receive the item.

By the end of June, the eight unmanned parcel lockers recorded 6,353 uses, showing a steady usage rate of about 1,000 cases per month.

In addition to the Women’s Safe Delivery Lockers, Jung-gu has increased the number of 'Safe Return Scouts' who accompany women returning home late at night, adding more in Hwanghak-dong and Dasan-dong compared to last year. They also operate 'Women’s Safety Guards' who detect hidden cameras installed in open restrooms or changing rooms, focusing on women’s safety.

Seoyangho, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, "We will implement various safety measures to create an environment where vulnerable groups, including women, can feel safe."
