Emergency Restoration Completed at 20 out of 32 River Damage Sites
[Asia Economy Honam Regional Headquarters Reporter Lee Seongseong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Junsung) is making every effort to carry out emergency restoration from heavy rain damage.
According to Yeonggwang-gun on the 6th, on the 29th of last month when a heavy rain warning was issued, Yeomsan-myeon recorded 227mm of rainfall, with a maximum hourly rainfall of 76.5mm, and an average of 166mm of heavy rain fell.
As a result, significant damage occurred including 18 cases of house flooding, 9 displaced persons, 363 hectares of flooded farmland, and 32 locations of small stream embankment washouts.
In particular, coinciding with the high tide of seawater, the region’s major rivers, Watancheon and Bulgapcheon, experienced difficulties in discharging river water, causing flooding of tributary streams and embankment washouts.
The county quickly began emergency restoration work from the day after the rain stopped to prevent additional damage to the 32 river sites where embankment washouts occurred, completing emergency restoration at 20 sites by the 5th. The remaining sites will also be restored as quickly as possible.
At the same time, efforts are being made to resolve the issue of securing restoration soil near the damaged sites due to crop planting.
By producing ton bags at the site currently used as a sand yard for existing river dredging soil and supplying them directly to the emergency restoration sites, the emergency restoration time is being shortened.
A Yeonggwang-gun official said, “Since the damage restoration is not yet complete and heavy rain is forecast again, the county will do its utmost to minimize damage,” and added, “The ground is weakened due to the heavy rain last week, so please be especially careful to avoid safety accidents.”
