[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), launched as an integrated supervisory body for personal information, held its first plenary meeting on the afternoon of the 5th and deliberated and resolved the "Rules on the Operation of the Personal Information Protection Commission" as its first agenda item.

As an agenda item for the efficient handling of the PIPC's deliberation and resolution tasks, the commission decided to disclose the agenda and minutes except in cases of confidentiality such as national security or infringement of corporate trade secrets. Additionally, repetitive legal interpretations or similar personal information infringement risk assessment agendas will be handled through subcommittees to facilitate prompt rights remedies for the public and enhance the effectiveness of personal information protection policy implementation.

Secondly, at the request of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the amendment to the "Enforcement Decree of the Local Tax Act" was processed as an expedited agenda. This amendment allows local governments and others to collect related real estate information necessary to verify the number of houses held per household.

Jung Sung-woo, a PIPC commissioner and professor at Sungkyunkwan University School of Law, said, "I feel a heavy responsibility in an era where demand for data utilization is rapidly increasing," adding, "We will faithfully fulfill the necessary role to protect the valuable personal information of the public, enhance information rights, and revitalize the data economy."

Yoon Jong-in, chairman of the PIPC, stated, "We must go beyond the past role focused on legal interpretation and strengthen our role as a comprehensive control tower from policy to investigation and disposition," and pledged, "To meet public expectations, we will enhance our role in harmonizing personal information protection and utilization in the data era."
