Chungnam, Cheonan, and Others Request Government to Declare 'Special Disaster Areas'

[Asia Economy (Naepo) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province has officially requested the government to declare four cities and counties?Cheonan, Asan, Geumsan, and Yesan?as special disaster zones.

According to the province on the 6th, the cumulative rainfall in the region from the 28th of last month to the 4th of this month reached up to 384mm, with 13 out of 15 cities and counties experiencing heavy rain exceeding 200mm in a short period.

Due to the heavy rain, national and local roads in Chungnam were washed away, and landslides and river overflows caused property damage exceeding 100 billion won.

In this regard, Chungnam Governor Yang Seung-jo has requested the government to declare the four cities and counties, including Cheonan, as special disaster zones. Additionally, the day before, he officially submitted a proposal for the special disaster zone to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

Governor Yang said, “The government’s active support is necessary for the areas affected by the heavy rain in Chungnam. We understand the urgency of the residents who suffered damage and will focus administrative efforts to resolve the difficulties.”

Meanwhile, a special disaster zone is declared by the president for areas severely damaged by major accidents or natural disasters. This declaration significantly expands national funding support for recovery, reducing the local government’s financial burden.
