[Asia Economy, reporter Park Chuleung] The floor spokesperson of the United Future Party evaluated Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol's remarks, such as "dictatorship in the guise of democracy," by saying, "He demonstrated the spirit of the prosecution in the face of attacks and attempts to undermine it by the government and the ruling party."
On August 4, Choi Hyungdoo, the United Future Party's floor spokesperson, appeared on KBS Radio's 'Kim Kyungrae's Strongest Current Affairs' and stated, "The prosecution's fundamental duty is to break what is wrong and reveal what is right." He added, "Is it not about breaking evil forces and realizing justice? In particular, the prosecution's job is not to catch petty thieves, but to uncover corruption involving those in power."
He continued, "There are major evils at play: former Blue House officials who, hiding behind power, interfered in the Ulsan mayoral election that should have been conducted democratically; cases where members of the ruling party used their positions to commit wage arrears; attempts to illegally transfer enormous wealth to their children; and ongoing cases where the goodwill of citizens, who wanted to help elderly victims of historical injustices, was exploited for embezzlement of donations and misappropriation of funds, the whereabouts of which remain unknown. Yet, the prosecution's investigations into these matters have been halted."
Choi stated, "This was due to the government's and the ruling party's attempts to undermine and attack Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol," and added, "Prosecutor General Yoon has once again demonstrated this spirit to new prosecutors, showing that the prosecution's mission is not to catch petty thieves or cattle thieves, but to uncover large-scale corruption involving those in power. By doing so, he demonstrated that this is how democracy can be restored."
Regarding the Democratic Party's push for real estate-related legislation, he remarked, "There is, in fact, no way to stop it. It is regrettable." He continued, "However, as Representative Yoon Heesook garnered much public support last week with just a five-minute speech opposing the bill, the only option is to point out the wrong direction of the major opposition party's governance and gain the agreement and support of the people."
Choi also stated, "Last week, the United Future Party announced a policy to supply one million homes where they are most needed. We will promote such policy alternatives to gain public support."
He further commented, "The government's misguided intervention has damaged the lease market and caused even greater suffering for tenants without homes. This is something cities in the United States and Europe are all experiencing. There is even a saying that the surest way to destroy a city is for the government to intervene in the lease market. We will make this clear to the public and establish a line of defense so that the government and the ruling party cannot unilaterally push through such reckless policies."
