Opening of Gates at Bukhan River's Cheongpyeong, Uiam, and Chuncheon Dams... Heavy Rain Warning for Central Gangwon

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] As heavy rain warnings have been issued mainly in the Gangwon region, dams in the Bukhang River basin have simultaneously opened their sluice gates to control water levels. Consequently, the water level of the Han River is also expected to rise, requiring caution.


The Han River Hydropower Headquarters has been continuously increasing the discharge from Paldang Dam, which opened its sluice gates on the 29th of last month. On this day, starting from 4:10 PM, Paldang Dam opened 10 sluice gates and discharged 10,000 tons of water per second.


Then, from 6 PM, for the first time this year, one sluice gate of Cheongpyeong Dam will be opened about 1.5 meters to release 820 tons of water downstream.


Additionally, focusing on the Gangwon Yeongseo region where heavy rain warnings have been issued, the upstream Uiam Dam and Chuncheon Dam will also open their sluice gates for the first time this year.


Chuncheon Dam will open one sluice gate at 7 PM to discharge 174 tons per second, and Uiam Dam will also open one sluice gate to release 420 tons of water per second.


Currently, heavy rain warnings are in effect for the southern mountainous areas of Gangwon, Yanggu, Jeongseon, Hongcheon, Inje plains, Hoengseong, Chuncheon, Hwacheon, Cheorwon, Wonju, and Yeongwol, while heavy rain advisories are issued for the central and northern mountainous areas of Gangwon, Samcheok, Pyeongchang plains, and Taebaek.
