[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] LG Uplus announced on the 31st that the cumulative number of views of the augmented reality (AR) media platform app ‘U+AR’ increased by 103% from the end of December last year to the end of June this year.
U+AR is an immersive media content platform launched in April last year. Virtual characters or figures appear in 3D as if seen right in front of you and can freely rotate 360 degrees. Currently, LG Uplus provides a total of 2,200 AR contents through U+AR, a 30% increase from about 1,700 titles as of the end of last year. It produces content in various genres such as ▲idols ▲entertainment ▲SNS stars ▲games ▲sports stars ▲kids ▲trot. Among them, idol content accounts for 1,021 titles, comedy 394 titles, and kids content such as extinct animals and characters 220 titles, focusing on expanding the ecosystem through content proliferation.
Analyzing the number of U+AR content views in the first half of this year, it was found that U+5G customers enjoyed idol content the most with Chungha, entertainment with Jang Do-yeon, and kids content with Pororo. First, the top content in the idol genre, which approaches 2,200 titles, was ‘Already 12 O’clock My Own Choreography Teacher Chungha.’ This content was also used in the U+5G advertisement aired last year. Kids content also received high responses. The children’s president Pororo and Kongsuni ranked first. The ‘Pororo Banana ChaCha,’ where each character sings the theme song, recorded over 100,000 views, showing its popularity. This is analyzed to be a combination of AR’s feature of merging virtual objects with the real world to take photos and videos together, and the characteristics of young children who are curious and enjoy active activities. Park Jae-gyu, head of LG Uplus AR Service Team, said, “With the spread of 5G, consumption of new types of immersive content such as AR and VR is gradually increasing,” and added, “We hope people can create memories by taking photos and videos with celebrities and characters who are hard to meet in person, even if only for a moment.”
