30s Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Sexually Assaulting Girlfriend and Her Daughter

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ga-yeon] A man in his 30s who sexually assaulted his partner and her 10-year-old daughter was sentenced to prison.

The 12th Criminal Division of the Daejeon District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Chang-kyung) announced on the 9th that A (36), who was tried for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (rape of a minor under 13) and sexual assault, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The court also ordered A to complete 80 hours of a sexual violence treatment program and imposed a 10-year employment restriction at child and youth-related institutions and welfare facilities for the disabled.

The court stated, "Considering the location and method of the crime, the age of the child victim, and the relationship between the victims, the nature of the crime is very serious and the blameworthiness is so great that society cannot tolerate it. A denied all charges and claimed that the victims were lying, and did not receive forgiveness."

However, the court explained the sentencing by saying, "Considering that A defected from North Korea several years ago and has no prior record of sexual offenses, and that the crime appears to have been committed impulsively during a conflict with B (37), his common-law spouse."

A was charged with sexually assaulting C (10), B's daughter, at B's residence in Seo-gu, Daejeon, on December 14 last year by giving her cola mixed with alcohol and threatening her with a weapon.

A is also accused of sexually assaulting B, who returned home two days later on December 16 last year. At that time, A reportedly grabbed B by the hair, dragged her to the master bedroom, repeatedly struck her head, and held both her hands to prevent resistance.

During the trial, A's defense attorney claimed that the sexual relations with B were consensual and denied the sexual assault of C, but the court did not accept these claims.
