Opening of Yangcheon-gu Records Preservation Archive

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) is opening an archival storage facility in the basement of the Yangcheon Cultural Center at 2 PM on the 14th to systematically and professionally manage and preserve records scattered across various departments that are at risk of damage.

The Yangcheon-gu archival storage consists of permanent and general storage areas, a records selection and classification workspace, an administrative data room, and a reading room. It is expected to manage and preserve numerous important records produced by Yangcheon-gu, collect and preserve sensitive records of Yangcheon residents that have value as records, and transform them into cultural resources.

To commemorate the opening of the archival storage, a small exhibition titled "Mokdong New Town Apartment Development Seen Through Records," featuring the earliest records from the development of Mokdong Apartments, will be held. After the opening ceremony on the 14th, the exhibition will be open to all Yangcheon residents from 3 PM.

This is the first time a permanent exhibition room has been created within an archival storage facility among Seoul's autonomous districts.

Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, “This exhibition displays the background of the initial development of Mokdong New Town Apartments, important project plans and administrative records related to it, construction process photos starting from 1984, sales and resident guidance documents, as well as newspaper scrapbooks covering the unsold apartment crisis and the recovery of Mokdong Apartments' popularity. It will be a time to encounter memories through vivid records.”

He also added, “Going forward, we will guarantee residents' right to know through access to records, preserve various life histories that resonate with residents by finding records from their daily lives, and pursue a new paradigm of records management where people can enjoy record culture nearby.”
