Gyeongnam Province Accelerates Labor Policy through 'Labor Policy Basic Plan Service Kick-off Meeting'

Survey on the Working Conditions of Vulnerable Workers Including Platform Workers in Businesses with Fewer Than 5 Employees

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] Gyeongnam Province announced on the 8th that it held a 'Kick-off Meeting for the Establishment of the Basic Labor Policy Plan Research Project' at the provincial government small conference room, attended by the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Changwon National University and the provincial labor policy advisory committee members.

Through this project, the province plans to conduct a comprehensive survey on recent changes in labor types, such as small-scale workplaces with fewer than five employees and the rapid increase of platform workers, and based on the results, establish the 'Gyeongsangnam-do Five-Year Labor Policy Plan.'

The kick-off meeting was led by Professor Shim Sang-wan, the principal researcher from the executing agency, 'Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Changwon National University,' with researchers in charge of each detailed task presenting the project implementation plan.

The main contents of the research project include ▲ analysis of regional labor market characteristics ▲ survey on workplaces with fewer than five employees and platform workers ▲ demand analysis for labor policies in the Gyeongnam region.

Based on this, the province plans to set the vision and goals for labor policies in the Gyeongnam region and derive key tasks such as the operation plan for the Gyeongnam Labor Rights Center, measures to protect the rights of platform workers, and implementation plans for Gyeongsangnam-do industrial safety policies.

Kim Ki-young, Director of the Job Economy Bureau of Gyeongnam Province, said, “Labor affairs have so far been regarded solely as national affairs,” and added, “It is necessary for local governments to take the lead in formulating and executing policies tailored to local circumstances and to take responsibility for the outcomes through regional labor policies.”
