[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “What started as a small gesture for my neighbors has now become a part of my life. I am very happy to celebrate this honorable day.”

This is the sentiment expressed by Kim Eui-sun, who was inducted into the Guro District ‘Volunteer Hall of Fame.’

Guro District (Mayor Lee Sung) has established the ‘Volunteer Hall of Fame.’

On the 7th, Guro District announced that it created the ‘Volunteer Hall of Fame’ to honor the efforts and sacrifices of volunteers who have quietly cared for their neighbors behind the scenes.

The ‘Volunteer Hall of Fame’ records the names of the ‘Volunteer Kings.’ The Volunteer King award is given annually in December on Volunteer Day to those who have accumulated more than 5,000 hours of volunteer service. The certification criteria were established in 2009.

The Volunteer Hall of Fame was installed on the 3rd floor of the new district office building, next to the Volunteer Center, on the 2nd. The plaque bears the founding purpose: “We deeply thank the volunteers who have quietly dedicated themselves behind the scenes, and to honor their noble spirit, we engrave their names so that their warm hearts may remain long in the memories of the residents.”

From 2009 to 2019, Guro District inducted 40 Volunteer Kings into the Volunteer Hall of Fame. They have cared for neighbors in the community through various means such as providing side dishes to vulnerable groups, cleaning, hairdressing volunteer work, and home repairs.

Going forward, additional inductees will be added to the ‘Volunteer Hall of Fame’ each year when new Volunteer Kings are selected.
