Gangseo District Adds Three More "Noriteo" Leisure Spaces for Seniors

[Asia Economy, Reporter Park Jongil] Seoul's Gangseo District (District Mayor Roh Hyunsong) announced that it has established three additional “Noriteo” leisure spaces for senior citizens.

“Noriteo” is an outdoor leisure area designed for seniors who have difficulty accessing traditional senior centers and welfare facilities. These spaces are set up in locations frequently visited by seniors and are equipped with amenities such as chairs with backrests and sunshades (pavilions). They also offer a variety of leisure programs preferred by seniors, including recreation and simple physical activities like health exercises and walking.

In October of last year, the district created a Noriteo for seniors at Byeotgol Children's Park in Hwagok-bondong. By linking with the Senior Welfare Center, they operated programs such as crafts and calisthenics, which received a positive response from the elderly participants.

Building on this, the district has selected three more parks popular among seniors this year-Deungchon Neighborhood Park, Seonangdang Neighborhood Park, and Baedari Children's Park-to establish additional Noriteo spaces.

Old benches and pergolas were replaced and new signs were installed to create a healing space where seniors can relax and enjoy themselves. However, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Noriteo will temporarily operate solely as a resting area for seniors. The timing for resuming senior programs will be determined based on the progression of the COVID-19 situation.

District Mayor Roh Hyunsong stated, “I hope that Noriteo will serve as a place where seniors can break free from indoor-focused leisure activities and become the main participants in meaningful leisure programs.” He added, “We will continue to actively support vibrant leisure activities for seniors so they can enjoy a lively and fulfilling later life.”

Meanwhile, the district plans to establish six more Noriteo spaces by 2022 and operate a variety of programs to support vibrant leisure activities for seniors.
