Ulsan Bukbu Fire Station Operates Reading Day... Providing Firefighters with Opportunities for Mental and Physical Well-being
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Books are stepping in as a solution to prevent post-traumatic stress disorder targeting firefighters risking their lives at fire scenes and emergency rescue sites. The idea is to blow away worries and stress through reading.
Ulsan Bukbu Fire Station will operate a 'Reading Day' starting in July. This day was created to improve firefighters' job performance and prevent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Reading Day is run with 30 books of various genres purchased monthly, including humanities, poetry collections, and novels. Firefighters read books during their off-duty hours or free time.
The operation method involves distributing three books per department, rotating them every two months, and holding relaxed reading discussions about the books during expanded executive meetings.
Park Jeong-jin, chief of Bukbu Fire Station, said, "We hope that comfortable reading will help firefighters' mental and physical well-being and mental health," adding, "We established reading time to relieve the trauma and stress experienced by firefighters in various and dangerous field activities."
