[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] Eric Chan (陳國基), Chief of Staff at the Hong Kong Chief Executive's Office, has been appointed as the Secretary-General of the newly established Hong Kong National Security Committee.
On the 2nd, China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that according to the provisions of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Kong National Security Law)," the State Council appointed Eric Chan as Secretary-General of the Hong Kong National Security Committee on the nomination of Chief Executive Carrie Lam.
The Hong Kong National Security Committee is a newly established overarching security organization under the Hong Kong National Security Law. While Chief Executive Lam serves as the chairperson, a National Security Adviser appointed by the central government of China is dispatched, effectively making it an agency under the jurisdiction of the central government.
