President Moon's Approval Rating Falls Below 50%... Democratic Party Also Plummets to 30% Range [Realmeter]

[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his administration has fallen for six consecutive weeks, breaking below the 50% mark for the first time in 15 weeks.


According to Realmeter's announcement on the 2nd, based on a public opinion survey commissioned by tbs conducted from the 29th of last month to the 1st of this month, the positive evaluation of President Moon's administration dropped by 3.9 percentage points from the previous week's weekly aggregate to 49.4%. The 40% range was last recorded in the third week of March (49.3%), marking 15 weeks since then.


Negative evaluations rose by 3.4 percentage points to 46.1%. The gap between positive and negative evaluations narrowed to 3.3 percentage points, entering the margin of error for the first time in 15 weeks.


The decline in approval ratings was led by Busan·Gyeongnam, people in their 30s and 50s, and centrists. By region, Busan·Ulsan·Gyeongnam saw a 7.0 percentage point drop to 46.3%, and Gyeonggi·Incheon showed a 4.7 percentage point decrease to 49.3%.


By age group, those in their 30s fell from 53.9% last week to 46.5%, a drop of 7.4 percentage points. The 50s age group recorded a 4.8 percentage point decline to 49.4%. By ideological tendency, centrists showed a 5.9 percentage point decrease from the previous week to 43.6% approval.

Regarding party support, the Democratic Party of Korea recorded 38.1%, down 3.1 percentage points from the previous week. The 30% range was last seen in the second week of February (39.9%), marking 20 weeks since then. The United Future Party rose 1.9 percentage points to 30.0%, returning to the 30% range for the first time in 14 weeks since the fourth week of March (30.0%). The gap between the two major parties narrowed to 8.1 percentage points, returning to single digits for the first time in 14 weeks.


The Open Democratic Party recorded 5.4%, down 0.2 percentage points; the Justice Party rose 1.0 percentage point to 5.2%; and the People's Party fell 1.0 percentage point to 2.7%.


This survey contacted 38,370 voters aged 18 and over nationwide, with a final 1,507 respondents completing the survey, resulting in a 3.9% response rate. The sampling error is ±2.5 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. For more details, refer to the Central Election Survey Deliberation Commission website.
