[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in South Korea increased by 51 on the 1st.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight on that day, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose by 51 from the previous day’s midnight to 12,850.
The daily new confirmed cases recorded 113 over the weekend (51 cases) and holiday (62 cases), showing the largest increase since April 4-5, when there were 175 cases. However, after dropping to the low 40s on the 29th of last month (42 cases) and the previous day, the number rose again to the 50s on this day.
Among the 51 newly confirmed cases, 36 were locally transmitted and 15 were imported. In the case of local transmission, 9 cases were in Seoul and 11 in Gyeonggi Province, totaling 20 cases in the metropolitan area. Additionally, 12 new cases were confirmed in Gwangju, 3 in Daejeon, and 1 in Daegu.
Of the 15 imported cases, 5 were detected during quarantine. The remaining cases were confirmed after entry in Incheon (2 cases), Daejeon (1 case), Gyeonggi (5 cases), Chungnam (1 case), and Jeonnam (1 case).
Combining local infections and imported cases, the metropolitan area accounts for about half of the total, with 27 cases. New confirmed cases were reported in 8 cities and provinces nationwide, including the metropolitan area.
The number of patients who have been declared recovered and released from isolation reached 11,613, an increase of 76 from the previous day. The death toll remains at 282, unchanged from the previous day.
