[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) held a 3rd anniversary commemorative event for the establishment of the Seongdong Peace Statue of a Girl at Wangsimni Square on the 24th, together with private organizations such as the Seongdong Peace Statue of a Girl Memorial Project Association.
On this day, official ceremonies such as commemorations were canceled due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), but about 30 members of the event organizers, including the Seongdong Peace Statue of a Girl Memorial Project Association, History Echo Seongdong Statue Guardians, and Seongdong Daum, who gathered to establish the statue, participated in a flower offering and silent tribute to remember the painful history and express their wish for peace.
The ‘Seongdong Peace Statue of a Girl’ was established in June 2017 through fundraising hosted by the residents to restore the human rights and honor of the Japanese military comfort women grandmothers and to pass on historical lessons to future generations, especially youth, so that the painful past history is not repeated.
Since then, the district office and related organizations such as the Seongdong Peace Statue of a Girl Memorial Project Association have been carrying out various activities including promoting the historical significance and value of the statue, managing the statue, maintaining the surrounding environment, conducting campaigns to correctly understand history, and participating in the 100th anniversary event of the March 1st Movement.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “I thank the members who prepared the event despite the COVID-19 situation to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the establishment of the Seongdong Peace Statue of a Girl, which was created with the wishes of Seongdong residents. I hope that the Seongdong Peace Statue of a Girl will continue to remember our painful history and play a role in educating youth about history correctly.”
