Completion of Pet-Friendly Youth Housing (Bukgajwa-dong 3-130) by the End of This Month; Tenant Recruitment in the Second Half of the Year... Named 'Gyeonu-ilga,' This Housing Model Developed by Seodaemun-gu Is Designed to Supply Young Single-Person Households Raising Dogs as Pets.
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) will complete the pet-friendly youth housing (Bukgajwa-dong 3-130) by the end of this month and will recruit tenants in the second half of this year.
Named ‘Gyeonu-ilga,’ this housing model was developed by Seodaemun-gu to provide housing for single young households who keep dogs as pets.
As more people want to raise pets without conflicts with neighbors, such housing is being built in the private sector, but this is the first customized public rental housing of its kind in Korea.
The housing sits on a land area of 238㎡ with 5 floors above ground and a total floor area of 475.69㎡. The first floor includes a parking lot and a community space for communal activities.
From the 2nd to the 5th floor, there are residential spaces where 12 single young households can live. The rooftop also has a space where residents can relax with their dogs.
Seodaemun-gu reflected the opinions of pet housing experts in the design, material selection, and space arrangement, and plans to establish tenant selection criteria and community housing living rules in the future.
Following ‘Gyeonu-ilga,’ the 5th youth housing in Seodaemun-gu, the district will also build the 6th, tentatively named ‘Sinchon Startup Youth Housing’ (Changcheon-dong 20-81 and 8 other lots) by the end of next year.
Located within 300m of Sinchon Station and 600m of Ewha Womans University Station on Subway Line 2, this housing is near Youth Startup Dream Centers 1 and 2, Sinchon Paranggorae, and the startup town Front 1 will open soon.
With a land area of 671.5㎡, 3 basement floors, 13 floors above ground, and a total floor area of 5512.11㎡, it will accommodate 165 single young households. The first floor will be a community space, and the 13th floor will be a youth startup incubator space.
Seodaemun-gu plans to sign an MOU with D.CAMP (Banking Sector Youth Startup Foundation) and discuss specific tenant selection directions.
Seodaemun-gu has continuously supplied housing for young people. ‘Iwa-ilga’ (Youth Housing No. 1), opened in Bukgajwa-dong in 2016, was the first customized youth rental housing in a Seoul autonomous district, meaning ‘Two roofs, one family.’
Two 5-story buildings house 28 single young residents, who voluntarily formed a housing cooperative to maintain the housing. The tenant selection process included multiple training sessions, mentoring, and interviews for cooperative establishment, and the name ‘Iwa-ilga’ was decided by cooperative members through a contest and voting.
The share house ‘Cheongnyeon Nuri’ (Youth Housing No. 2) was opened in Namgajwa-dong in 2018 after Seodaemun-gu actively accepted the construction proposal from the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation. Currently, 18 young people live there, and it is recognized as a successful collaboration between local government and corporations to improve youth housing welfare.
The Hongneung-dong Youth Future Community Housing (Youth Housing No. 3), supplied in 2019, is a hybrid housing for single young households, independence and democracy activists and their families, and newlyweds. Among 10 buildings, 4 are youth housing, providing homes for 60 young people. This spring, 16 young people moved into Hongneung-dong ‘Youth Housing No. 4.’
Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, stated, “We will continue to promote the supply of public rental housing for youth to improve youth housing welfare and establish a foundation for independence, and actively develop housing models that meet the diverse housing needs of young people in this process.”
