Jeonju-si Jeollagamyeong, 'The Grand Resurrection Awakened from a 1000-Year Sleep'... Countdown Begins

Jeonju-si Jeollagamyeong, 'The Grand Resurrection Awakened from a 1000-Year Sleep'... Countdown Begins

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gominhyeong] As the restoration project of Jeolla Gamyeong, which will become a source of pride for the 1 million pyeong old downtown area of Jeonju citizens, enters its final stage, it is regaining the former grandeur of the Joseon Dynasty's jurisdiction over Jeollado and Jeju Island.

The city announced on the 24th that the Jeolla Gamyeong recreation restoration construction is progressing smoothly, having completed the restoration of major external facilities and leaving only some processes to secure tourist flow paths.

Since the demolition of the old Jeonbuk Provincial Office building in 2015 and the start of the recreation restoration in November 2017, Jeolla Gamyeong has completed the installation and landscaping of key core buildings such as Seonhwadang, the office of the Jeolla Governor, Naea, Naea Haengrang, Gwanpunggak, Yeonsindang, as well as landscaping facilities like Cheugudae, gaseok, and paeseok.

Additionally, restoration of Naesammun, Oehaengrang, parts of the walls, the well, and the relocation of the Jeolla Governor's selection monument in Daga Park have been completed. Currently, only some pedestrian facilities remain to be completed to ensure safe visitor flow.

Besides these external facility works, the city developed content incorporating cutting-edge ICT (Information and Communication Technology) to reproduce the interior of Seonhwadang based on photographic materials of Lieutenant George Clayton Foulk, the U.S. charg? d'affaires in the late Joseon period.

Thus, Jeolla Gamyeong is being reborn not simply as a restored building but as a space connecting the past, present, and future.

Once the recreation restoration is completed, the old downtown area is expected to transform into a space where culture and history breathe, as well as become a new tourism axis connecting the Hanok Village, Jeonju Pungpaejigwan, and the old downtown area.

A city official from the Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau said, “Considering the safety of citizens and travelers, a completion ceremony will be promoted once a stable situation from COVID-19 is achieved.”
