[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Park Hee-eun] Lee Jong-beom, the author of the webtoon 'Doctor Frost,' gave advice to the daughter of actress Jang Ga-hyun.
On the MBC show 'Studying is Money?' aired on the 12th, Jang Ga-hyun's daughter, Jo Ye-eun, who dreams of becoming a webtoon artist, appeared.
Ye-eun, who wants to become a webtoon artist, hoped to enter university to study art. However, her parents insisted, "You can learn more if you jump into the field."
Regarding this, Lee Jong-beom shared his academic background (Psychology at Yonsei University) and said, "If you know how you want to use university as a means, going to university can help, but there is also a path if you don't go," adding, "It might be helpful to look at the debut routes of webtoon artists."
He explained methods such as winning contests, uploading to amateur boards, and submitting work to webtoon managers. He added, "You have to do all of them. If you do everything you can to meet readers and keep exposing your work, you never know what opportunities might come."
Lee Jong-beom then revealed the essential condition for a webtoon artist. He said, "You need to have curiosity. If Ye-eun draws a pet shop, she should ask questions like 'Where do the dogs in the pet shop come from?' Some call it studying, but I call it being a fan," emphasizing the importance of research.
When So Yi-hyun said, "I thought it would be drawing skills," Lee Jong-beom responded, "Being good at drawing is advantageous, similar to how actors have good looks," citing writer Joo Ho-min as an example.
He explained, "My close friend, writer Joo Ho-min, is not someone who draws well. You only need to draw enough to convey the story you created."
At the end of the broadcast, he also advised, "The only way to draw interesting comics is by drawing uninteresting comics," adding, "Those who fail quickly become comic artists faster."
