Police Expand Nationwide Dedicated Analyst System for Video Analysis Including CCTV and Black Box

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The National Police Agency announced on the 12th that it will expand the 'Dedicated Video Analyst System,' which is responsible for analyzing closed-circuit television (CCTV) and black box footage, nationwide.

The number of video analysis cases handled by the police has been increasing every year, from 972 cases in 2017 to 1,065 cases in 2018, and 1,410 cases last year.

Accordingly, to enhance the expertise in video analysis, the police conducted a pilot operation of the Dedicated Video Analyst System for six months from November last year to May this year in seven regional police agencies including Seoul, Busan, and Daegu. They continuously researched and developed analysis techniques, resulting in positive feedback that these could be shared nationwide.

The police plan to expand the Dedicated Video Analyst System to digital evidence analysis offices in regional police agencies nationwide after specialized video forensic training. A police official stated, "Through the pilot operation, we confirmed improvements in analysis quality and expertise," adding, "We will continue research on new video device analyses such as voice recovery from black boxes and review the expansion of dedicated analysis areas by collecting opinions from analysts nationwide."
