Samsung Display "Optimized for High-Speed Operation, OLED Panel Internationally Certified"

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung Display's organic light-emitting diode (OLED) has received the 'Seamless Display' certification from a global technology verification company for its clear and fast screen driving technology without motion blur.

On the 4th, Samsung Display announced that its 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rate smartphone OLED panels achieved industry-leading levels in image blur length and motion picture response time (MPRT), earning the Seamless Display certification from the global certification company SGS.

MPRT (Motion Picture Response Time) refers to the response speed of video and is an international display standard that measures the time it takes for the afterimage of a single frame to disappear by capturing the movement of a pattern. SGS, established in 1878, is a global certification and inspection specialist headquartered in Switzerland.

According to SGS, the blur length of Samsung Display's 90Hz and 120Hz OLEDs is up to 0.9mm and below 0.7mm respectively, and the motion picture response times are up to 14 milliseconds (ms) and below 11ms respectively, recording industry-leading levels.

SGS also conducted a blur evaluation at the same refresh rates between Samsung OLED and existing displays. The evaluation results showed that the blur of Samsung OLED at 90Hz is 1.2 times better than that of existing displays.

The refresh rate refers to the number of images a display shows per second. 120Hz means 120 frames change per second, and the higher the refresh rate, the clearer and more natural the displayed images become.

Meanwhile, in Samsung Display's own evaluation, the blur of Samsung OLED at 120Hz was 1.5 times better than that of existing displays, proving that OLED is a technology optimized for high-speed driving.

Besides refresh rate, the response speed inherent to the display technology is crucial in determining video quality. OLED achieves fast response speeds based on rapid electron mobility and current-driven operation without the need for liquid crystals, enabling more natural screen rendering.

Jiho Baek, Vice President and Head of Small and Medium-sized Strategy Marketing Team at Samsung Display, stated, “With the commercialization of 5G, there is a rapid increase in access to high-resolution video streaming services and game content, leading to growing demand for smartphone displays with high refresh rates of 120Hz or higher that can effectively support these. OLED provides a clean and smooth screen without motion blur based on fast response speeds, offering a completely different user experience compared to existing displays.”
