Namwon Aerospace Astronomy Observatory Selected for "Regional Public Science Museum Exhibition Improvement Support Contest"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Nosik] Namwon Aerospace Astronomy Observatory has been finally selected for the '2020 Regional Public Science Museum Exhibition Improvement Support Contest Project' promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The exhibition improvement support contest project is a project promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT to improve outdated exhibition contents of regional public science museums in order to enhance the quality of regional science culture services and contribute to the popularization of science culture. This year, four places including Busan, Namwon, and Jeonnam were selected, with Namwon being the only one selected in Jeonbuk.

Since its opening in 2009, Namwon Aerospace Astronomy Observatory has served as a representative convergence-type specialized science museum in the southwestern region, attracting about 30,000 visitors annually and playing the role of a regional hub science museum. However, most of the aviation and space-related exhibits have aged, making it urgent to supplement the experiential facilities.

Accordingly, Namwon City, in cooperation with Jeonbuk Province, raised the necessity of the regional science museum exhibition improvement support project to the Ministry of Science and ICT and participated in the contest, ultimately being selected.

Accordingly, the city plans to use the total project cost of 1 billion KRW (500 million KRW from the national government and 500 million KRW from the city) secured through this contest project to develop exhibition contents applicable to the 4th Industrial Revolution, convergence-type experiential programs such as aviation drones + VR, and to create a state-of-the-art scientific experiential cultural space.

A city official stated, "Through this contest project, we will build professional exhibition and experiential facilities and develop diverse exhibition contents," adding, "As a result, we will secure the competitiveness of local specialized science museums and further enhance the status of Namwon as a cultural city."
