Operation of Drone Surveillance Team and Ordinance Revision... Significant Decrease in Spring Fires Compared to Last Year
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] It has been revealed that spring (March to May) fires in the Jeonnam region have significantly decreased compared to the same period last year.
According to the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters (Chief Ma Jaeyoon) on the 3rd, the number of fires during this spring period was 731, a 15.3% (132 cases) decrease compared to 863 cases last year.
Casualties also decreased by 38.2% (13 people), with 21 people (5 deaths, 16 injuries) compared to 34 people (8 deaths, 26 injuries) last year.
The main causes of fires were negligence at 67% (490 cases), electrical causes at 15.6% (114 cases), and mechanical causes at 6.8% (50 cases). The highest occurrence time was between 2 and 3 p.m., accounting for 9.8% (72 cases).
In particular, forest fires (wildfires, grass fires) numbered 135 cases, a 31.5% (62 cases) decrease compared to 197 cases last year, and casualties decreased by 75% (9 people) from 12 people (2 deaths, 10 injuries) to 3 people (2 deaths, 1 injury).
The Jeonnam Fire Headquarters analyzed that factors contributing to the decrease include the operation of an aerial surveillance team for forest fire-prone areas using drones, the recently enacted 'Jeollanam-do Fire Prevention Ordinance Amendment' last month, and measures to reduce casualties from forest fires.
Ma Jaeyoon, Chief of the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters, said, “Although the number of fires and damages are on a downward trend, the risk of a large-scale fire caused by momentary negligence always exists. We will continue to do our best to protect the precious lives and property of residents with proactive policies.”
