[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk has taken proactive measures to revitalize traditional markets weakened by COVID-19 and to foster a social atmosphere encouraging consumer spending among citizens.
On the 28th, Jeongeup City announced on the 29th that about 100 employees from the Welfare and Education Bureau (Director Park Bokman), including Mayor Yoo Jinseop, visited Saemgoeul Market and Yeonji Market to hold a shopping event using Jeongeup City's disaster basic income and the government's emergency disaster relief prepaid cards.
The purpose is to revive the local economy, which has been depressed due to the COVID-19 crisis, through active consumption of the disaster basic income and emergency disaster relief funds, while also practicing sharing.
On that day, Mayor Yoo and the Welfare and Education Bureau staff supported the revitalization of the depressed traditional markets by purchasing daily necessities and dining at restaurants within the markets.
Additionally, Mayor Yoo and Director Park toured various parts of the markets to encourage merchants facing difficulties due to COVID-19 and to listen to their concerns.
Mayor Yoo Jinseop said, “I am glad that during this difficult time for everyone due to COVID-19, this event serves as an opportunity to revive the local economy and share with neighbors. I hope this event will inject vitality into the local economy and help us overcome the COVID-19 crisis together.”
Meanwhile, Jeongeup City's disaster basic income provides 100,000 KRW per person, totaling 11 billion KRW, to all Jeongeup citizens regardless of income or property.
Also, the government emergency disaster relief fund, which is distributed differentially from 400,000 KRW to 1,000,000 KRW depending on the number of household members, supports a total budget of 31.5 billion KRW for 54,000 households.
The city plans to actively promote the use of these funds through SNS, the city website, blogs, and more, so that many citizens can voluntarily participate in the consumption promotion campaign.
The merchant associations of Saemgoeul Market, Yeonji Market, and Shintaein Market are also welcoming visitors wearing masks and conducting thorough disinfection and sterilization to ensure that customers can use the traditional markets safely and comfortably.
